The Ambassadors #1 is the latest series from Millarworld. It’s written by Mark Millar while the art comes from Frank Quitely. Millarworld fans will know this isn’t the first time Millar and Quitely have worked together as they did Jupiter’s Legacy together. However, The Ambassadors promises to be something different.
The new series revolves around a scientist who cracks the code for superpowers. Instead of giving the powers to a Government or the highest bidder, it’s to go to six people who are good of heart. Think of it as Charlie and the Chocolate Factory without the chocolate, an eccentric chocolatier and children disappearing one by one.
The Ambassadors #1 doesn’t take long to set up the premise. Doctor Choon-He Chung gives a presentation where she reveals her powers. However, it isn’t exactly that straightforward. There’s more to her story than what meets the eye. Thankfully, it’s explained in the issue. Even though it’s mostly exposition to set up what’s coming, there is some action that’ll whet your appetite.
For the first issue, it does everything it needs to. It sets up the story nicely and wastes no time in throwing some shocking moments at you. Moreover, it doesn’t let up for a second, even during the exposition. It keeps you interested and makes you want to learn the history of this world.
Meanwhile, Frank Quitely’s art is as great as always. It’s great to see him back on a Millarworld comic. To be honest, there were panels where I thought I was reading an issue from a different universe. His crisp and bright art is reminiscent of his work on All Star Superman. Considering this is a story about superheroes, there is no one better to bring them to life.
I can’t wait to see where the next issue goes.
