Random Acts of Violence
Random Acts of Violence is directed by Jay Baruchel. It’s based on a comic book of the same name by Jimmy Palmiotti and Justin Gray. The movie stars Jesse Williams, Jordana Brewster, Jay Baruchel and Niamh Wilson. Fans of The Boys, Watchmen and other adult-orientated comic stories may enjoy it more.
Shudder states:
When comic book creator Todd Walkley embarks on a road trip to a convention, people start getting killed. It soon becomes clear that a crazed fan is using Todd’s “SLASHERMAN” comic as inspiration for the brutal murders.
As the bodies pile up–and Todd’s friends and family become victims themselves–Todd will be forced to take artistic responsibility.
The synopsis shows one of the big issues of the movie. It’s an age old question used by some parents and the media. Do violent works create monsters? Random Acts of Violence explores how these types of work can inspire someone to do bad, but they can’t be blamed.
Like Jesse Williams’ character says in the movie, if a mind is already imbalanced, they will use anything as an excuse to act out their fantasies. On the other hand, Random Acts of Violence also takes the lens that some fans will become toxic in their obsession.
Random Acts of Violence is sadistic. It makes you want to turn away, but there’s some underneath the surface that speaks to our current issues. It’s over-the-top but grounded when it needs to be. The heart of the story is conflict, be it with an enemy, a relationship or yourself.
Good luck if you watch this movie, you won’t leave it unscathed.
