The Thing is one of John Carpenter’s many movies that’ll make you quiver in fear and groan in disgust. The premise sees a group of researchers in Antartica who come into contact with a parasite.
The parasite hails from outer-space and assimilates and copies other lifeforms. It’s a base under siege story where there’s no time for trust. Anyone, or anything, in the base may very well be the Thing.
It stars Kurt Russell in the main role as the research team’s pilot. As the Thing takes over, he realises it’s up to him to figure out who is real and who is isn’t. The movie culminates in an explosive finale that’ll leave viewers satisfied.
One of the great things about the movie is how current it still seems. It’s a staple of John Carpenter movies, but he creates worlds that don’t seem cheap or out of place decades later. While other Horror movies from the 80s look cheap now, The Thing manages to sidestep that.
It’s through the use of practical effects he achieves this. The many forms of the Thing are horrifying and will make even the strongest squeamish. It’s unnerving and disgusting to see the Thing popping out of bodies. Yet, there’s also something exciting about it.
The Thing by John Carpenter is a must-watch. If you haven’t seen it, like I hadn’t, then do it now!
