MaleVolent is a Netflix original directed by Olaf De Fleur. It’s based on the novel Hush by Eva Konstantopoulos and stars Florence Pugh.
The story focuses on scam artists who fake paranormal encounters. During an assignment to country house, they end up facing untold Horrors and soon lose grip on reality.
There’s a solid storyline in it, somewhere. Unfortunately, it wasn’t available in the finished product. Don’t get me wrong, MaleVolent is by no means the worst movie ever but it also wasn’t the best.
One of its problems is not knowing what it is. One minute it seems to be about a brother and sister uncovering the truth about the women in their family and then they are in a country house where the paranormal is no longer as important as the occupants.
It appears the first 30 minutes are scary enough and lead the watcher into believing they’re watching something special. That something special had so much promise.
I don’t want to be completely negative though as there are bright spots in MaleVolent. One of which is the lead, Florence Pugh. Florence wowed audiences in Fighting With My Family last year and co-stars alongside Scarlett Johansson in Black Widow next year.
She is the stand out of this movie and holds her own against veterans Celia Imrie and James Cosmo. She’s someone I hope goes far in her career and if she can give a great performance in a mediocre movie, then I can only be excited about what she’ll give in a great movie.
MaleVolent is a movie with potential but sadly it fails after the first 30 minutes and descends into clichés and minuscule development.
