Filmmaker Rupert Wyatt (Rise of the Planet of the Apes) spoke about the potential X-Men spin-off movie Gambit, while out doing press rounds for his new sci-fi movie Captive State.
Gambit is a film plagued with setbacks. It is strange because the film had a solid director (Rupert), solid lead actor (Channing Tatum), and apparently a solid script. So what happened to the film?
According to Rupert, the colossal failure of Fantastic Four caused Fox to drastically cut the budget for the film, and it never recovered. The devastating news came down just three months from the start of production.
Rupert also says that Tatum and Reid Carolin had a “terrific” idea for the film. In a recent interview with Collider, Rupert speaks about the delayed/
“It was terrific, it was a really exciting sort of Godfather with mutants set in the world of New Orleans with different gangs… It was a period film that dealt with the 70s up until the present day.
Was about kind of mutant gangs and the notion of what it means to belong, tribalism in this bayou-like environment. The swamps of New Orleans.
So it would’ve been a lot of fun. I know Channing sort of worked on the script to make it into more of a romantic comedy, I think. Which I read and it was great, it was very different to what I was involved in.
But now Disney have the reins so I don’t know what their plans are.”
Rupert goes on to say that Tatum and Reid were determined to get everything perfect to avoid any potential reshoots.
