Gemini Man is in trouble. And Lee’s CGI action thriller’s taking a beating with the critics. Not only that, but the film’s tracking to lose a minimum of $75 million at the box office.
This is not a good sign for the film. The film opened two weeks ago to $20.5 million, and closed-out with a worldwide total of $118.7 million. Gemini Man desperately needed to do well in China last weekend, but the film took in only $21 million.
The film’s complicated effects had to be rendered in 4K, 3D, and at 120 frames-per-second. This is why the VFX costs were high. The film cost $140 million after all tax rebates and incentives, with an additional marketing budget of $100 million.
Gemini Man‘s losses will be shared between Skydance Media, Paramount Pictures and China-based companies Fosun and Alibaba. Who is the real big loser here? IS this a sign that Will Smith’s career is on a huge downslope?
Smith, once had a huge box office draw, regardless of the film, but that’s seeming to shift as of late. Has he lost his A-list status, along with his ability to draw crowds at the box office?
