The Addams Family
They’re creepy and they’re kooky. Mysterious and spooky, they’re all together ooky… That’s how the song describes them. It’s not wrong either. The Addams Family is based on New Yorker cartoons by Charles Addams. There are countless versions of the family. Even now we’re waiting for the release of the Netflix series Wednesday starring Jenna Ortega and created by Tim Burton. There’s also the TV show from the 70s and the recent animated series (along with a Broadway musical). However, there’s a specific movie I’m focusing on.
The Addams Family 1991 stars Anjelica Huston, Raul Julia, Christopher Lloyd, Christina Ricci, Judith Malina, Jimmy Workman and Christopher Hart. Barry Sonnenfeld directs the final entry in our campy horror movies list. The story focuses on Gomez Addams’s long-lost brother, Fester, reappearing. Gomez is happy to see the brother he thought was dead back but unfortunately, it’s not who he thinks. Con artists are trying to defraud the family of their wealth.
There aren’t many movies families can watch during Halloween together. The Addams Family is one of them. It’s got comedy, action, scary moments and a loving husband who dances with his wife that’ll make all boyfriends and husbands have to up their game. Wednesday Addams also has several quotable moments that stay with you even years on. This goes double for the sequel Addams Family Values.
The Addams Family is full of twists and turns. It’s a non-stop ride of fun that doesn’t let up until the credits roll. Sure, it’s over-the-top and some of it doesn’t make sense, but that’s the whole point of a campy horror movie. It’s what makes this movie great.
