‘Indiana Jones’ May Soon be Getting Rebooted?

A theory has swirled around the internet for a while: Will Indiana Jones get rebooted? With Harrison Ford unable to defeat age, there are concerns that at 73, he is quickly becoming too old to be in the role. There is a new Indy film on the way that will be a sequel, not a prequel. Talks of where the franchise will go in the future, have sparked rumors that the franchise will be rebooted to allow the character to live on in future films.

The script for the sequel will be written by David Koepp, with Steven Spielberg set to direct. Spielberg recently spoke out about the new sequel’s direction, in particular the end of the movie:

“I think this one is straight down the pike for the fans. The one thing I will tell you is I’m not killing off Harrison [Ford] at the end of it.”

This is great news for fans and critics who feel that Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull was  big letdown. What is on the horizon for the franchise? Is there anywhere left to take Indiana Jones other than to the retirement home? As long as they stay with Harrison Ford, there isn’t much left to do. The franchise needs to start over. This situation is one of the few instances that I am in support of a reboot. In an interview with THR, Disney chairman, Bob Iger, was asked if Disney would push Indiana Jones in the same direction that they are pushing Star Wars. Iger says:

“Not like Star Wars, but we hope… right now, we’re focused on a reboot, or a continuum and then a reboot of some sort. Well, we’ll bring him back, then we have to figure out what comes next. That’s what I mean. It’s not really a reboot, it’s a boot – a reboot. I don’t know. We [got] Harrison Ford as Indiana Jones in the film. But then what’s the direction? I’ve had discussions about what the direction is, [but] I don’t want to get into it. I don’t think it reaches the scale of the universe of Star Wars, but I see making more. It won’t be just a one-off.”

Disney is interested in taking the franchise past Harrison Ford, and will continue to give fans more Indiana Jones films. The next Indiana Jones film is slated for a July 19, 2019 release.
