‘IT: Chapter Two’ Adds Key Elements Left Out Of First Film
Last year, Andy Muschetti’s adaptation of Stephen King’s IT surprised fans of the novel with how faithful the film was. The film didn’t turn away from translating a lot of the darker elements of the books to the big screen. Although the film was really dark, there were a number of things that Muschetti left out of the film. One big moment will come back for IT: Chapter Two.
A big cut from the film was a moment where the children have a sex train to protect themselves from the creature. Muschetti also chose not to address a few mythological elements from the book. The biggest one of these was the Ritual of Chüd, where the kids battled the creature psychologically.
In an interview with Cinema Blend, IT: Chapter 2 screenwriter Gary Dauberman confirms that the Ritual will show up in the 2019 sequel:
“The Ritual of Chüd is challenging. But it’s such an important component to the book that we had to address it. That stuff is difficult to balance, but because we [Dauberman, director Andy Muschietti, producer Barbara Muschietti] worked with each other before, when I’m writing pages and all that stuff it becomes more of a conversation and less like, ‘Hey, here’s what I did.’ It’s sort of organic; it’s really kind of just chipping away at the stone and trying to find the most focused, accessible way into some of more metaphysical aspects of that book.”
The Ritual of Chüd was in the 1990s television mini-series. It will be interesting to see how it looks in the sequel. There is no doubt that the blood will flow in the sequel. The Ritual only adds to the arsenal of attacks the kids will attempt.
Jessica Chastain, James McAvoy, Bill Hader, Jay Ryan, James Ransone, Andy Bean, Isaiah Mustafa, Teach Grant, Jess Weixler, Xavier Dolan, Will Beinbrink and Bill Skarsgard star in the new film along with all the returning members of the young cast.
IT: Chapter Two hits theaters on September 6, 2019.
