Recent news has surfaced, that says that David Ayer’s upcoming DC movie Suicide Squad has undergone extensive reshoots to retool the film. With the success of the full trailer, Warner Bros. felt that the film should be as light-hearted as the trailer was. This was not the case, as Ayer has stated that the film is darker than the trailer hints. Discussing the reshoots, Jared Leto speaks about his version of the Joker and what the role means to him.

Does this mean that the film could be in trouble? That is debatable, but inserting extra comedy could hurt the film. We will have to wait and see when the film hits theaters this August. You can almost guarantee that the film will do well, regardless of the film’s reception, something we saw with Zack Snyder’s Batman v Superman: Dawn of JusticeBatman v Superman is looking to pull in $58 Million during its second weekend in theaters. Theater-goers have completely ignored the critical reception of the film, which is currently sitting at a 29% approval rating on Rotten Tomatoes.

Talking with EW about the Joker that we will see in Suicide Squad and says that he just wanted to make it his own:

“You just knew you had to do something different. You had to make it your own. That happens all the time. Whether you’re a composer working on a piece of music that was written a century ago, or you’re an actor on stage, reinterpreting a play, it’s very common these days.

Directors take on great works of cinema, actors reinterpret roles, that’s been going on for a great deal of time. From Scarface to Hamlet. In some ways it’s really interesting to reinterpret, redefine. It a weighty thing to do. But it’s exciting.

The Joker is one of those roles. He was written brilliantly when he was first shared with the world 75 years ago, or something crazy like that. And I think I’m just really grateful I had the opportunity.”

Suicide Squad hits theaters on August 5th.
