Everything You Need To Know About Marvel’s ‘Civil War II’

Captain America: Civil War isn’t the only large-scale hero showdown that Marvel is about to unleash. It has been about a decade since the events of Civil War graced the pages of comic books and didn’t just split former allies, but also split fans who were forced to side with Steve Rogers or Tony Stark over the Superhero Registration Act. Marvel is setting up to do this once again with their upcoming feature event, Civil War II.

Marvel recently held a press conference to give us the run-down on what we can expect out of Civil War II, and what is the catalyst that causes this new rift. The panel was headed by Civil War II series writer Brian Michael Bendis, Editor Tom Brevoort, and Editor-in-Chief Axel Alonso. So what exactly causes the heroes to split again and go head-to-head? This time, the teams will be led by Tony Stark, and the other by Carol Danvers, with heroes switching sides multiple times throughout the story. Basically saying don’t get hooked up on why a certain hero is on a side that is not traditionally their stance, because they will eventually go to the right side.

How Does The Events of Civil War II Begin?

According to Tom Brevoort, the story will begin in a Free Comic Book Day comic that will not just be a tease to the upcoming event, but rather will feature a complete story. It all begins with an invasion that will need the Marvel heroes to come from all reaches of the globe to take on this new threat. The secret villain is still unknown, but is a big enough threat to need the help of the All-New All-Different Avengers and the Alpha Flight.

Could the Real Inhuman, Please Stand Up?

A new Inhuman named Ulysses will be at the center of this big debate. Ulysses has a unique set of powers: He can accurately predict the future. According to Bendis, “This is someone who had a specific view of the superhero community, and then is thrust right in the middle of it in a very controversial and dividing way.”

His powers will create a divide among the superheroes when they try to deal with how Ulysses powers should be used. Carol Danvers believes that they should use Ulysses to stop crimes before they even happen. This might remind you of a certain Steven Spielberg/ Tom Cruise movie called Minority Report. Tony Stark believes that you should not hold people accountable for crimes they have yet to commit. Bends goes on to say, “We were talking about things that were going on in the world today that are similarly dividing to our culture, which is very different from where we were 10 years ago with the original Civil War.”

One thing to note is that this rift will not encompass every Marvel hero, as it did during the first Civil War. Heroes will opt-in to this war, and will come and go so that their solo comic stories aren’t affected.

Will We Be Getting a Rehashed Story, Or Will It Be Unique?

It would be easy to say that Civil War 2 is set to just repeat the same design as Civil War, but according to Bendis, this story will evolve and become a lot different than its predecessor.

“We [are] talking about things that were going on in the world today that are similarly dividing to our culture, which is very different from where we were 10 years ago with the original Civil War.”

Tom Brevoort adds that, “There’s a surface similarity at the outset, and as the story continues, you’ll see it’s very, very different.”
