Mel Brooks (History of the World Part 1) made a name for himself, lampooning all sorts of genre films. None of his films are as beloved as Spaceballs. It was parody at its best. An argument could be made for Blazing Saddles or History of the World Part 1, but it was the success of Star Wars that made Spaceballs a huge hit. With Star Wars coming back in a huge way with The Force Awakens and The Last Jedi, there is renewed interest in making a sequel to Spaceballs. According to director Mel Brooks, the conversation has begun with MGM to make Spaceballs 2: The Search for More Money a reality.
18 months ago, rumors were swirling Hollywood that Brooks wanted to make a sequel to Spaceballs. In late 2015, Brooks said he wanted to start filming the sequel sometime in 2016. 2016 came and went, and not a peep was heard about the film starting production, or filming. A few nights ago, at a screening for another one of his classic films Young Frankenstein, Brooks said, “MGM is slightly interested in doing it because of Star Wars Rogue One and The Force Awakens and the new Star Wars explosion. So they think maybe, so we’re talking, who knows.”

This is not a done deal, as any talks of doing a sequel are in their early stages, but this could be big for Spaceballs. The film is zany, and takes concepts and twists them in new ways that seem fresh. Spaceballs is over-the-top and wonderful. I grew up watching Star Wars, but it was my aunt who introduced me to Spaceballs. From my first viewing, I was hooked. Brooks doesn’t sound too confident about it getting made, but a little bit of hope is still something.
Most people see the new Star Wars films as a huge cash grab, and they would be right. It is one of the most popular franchises of all-time, and Disney knew it would be an instant hit. Their acquisition of Lucasfilm has paid-off ten fold just after two films. That doesn’t mean fans are complaining, any new Star Wars films are more than welcome. If anything, to rid ourselves of the memories of those horrible prequels.
Keep your hopes up for Spaceballs 2: The Search for More Money, and ‘May the Schwartz be with you.”
