#3 The Shining (1980)
From the minds of Stephen King and Stanley Kubrick comes a horror film that people have been combing through with a fine-toothed comb since it hit theaters in 1980. Although Stephen King wasn’t happy with the liberties that Kubrick took with his story, time has shown that Kubrick was a genius. Whether you feel that The Shining was Kubrick’s apology for faking the moon landing (yes, it’s a theory), or you think that he is a mad genius, there are some amazing things happening in this film.
To say that Stanley Kubrick was a meticulous director is a bit of an understatement. Kubrick controls every aspect of a film, and fills every nook-and-cranny with symbolism and metaphor. The Shining is an amazing horror film that grew legs once it hit home video among the cult film fans. The Shining secures the number 3 spot on this list, for its graphic imagery, supernatural elements, and Stanley Kubrick’s meticulous eye. “All work and no play makes Jack a dull boy.”
