Host
Host is a new movie. It only released at the end of August and was created during the Corona pandemic. Taking place over Zoom, it sees a group of friends taking part in a séance. Directed by Rob Savage, Host stems from a prank he played on his friends.
Funnily enough, it’s those friends who are also part of the cast and crew. Host was created in 12 weeks before releasing on Shudder. Unlike the other movies on this list, it’s also only 57 minutes long. Yes, it’s shorter than some series these days.
It’s the short runtime that helps the movie along. There’s enough time to develop the characters while providing many scares. The good thing about Host is how some of its scares seem like they’re tropes, and yet they aren’t. Most of the scares don’t come where they’re expected.
As I said in my review, Host does the same thing as Halloween. It builds-up the creepy atmosphere until it’s too much to handle then hits the audience when they think they’re in the clear.
Host is currently a Shudder exclusive. However, it’s going to be in theatres for a limited run, as well as going to other platforms such as Amazon come December. It isn’t an overstatement to say Host is the best horror movie of the year.
