Tom Holland bears all the weight of countless fans expectations when he swings onto the big screen in Spider-Man: Homecoming. This is a role that was previously held by two others. Toby McGuire (Spider-Man, Spider-Man 2, Spider-Man 3), who starred on Sam Raimi’s trilogy, and Andrew Garfield (The Amazing Spider-Man, The Amazing Spider-Man 2) who starred in Marc Webb’s two Spidey films. These were both two actors who brought very different takes on Peter Parker and the Web Slinger himself.
So what can we expect from Tom Holland’s performance? Luckily, we got a taste of how Spider-man will be in his next stand-alone film, when he appeared in Captain America: Civil War. He was noticeably younger than his two other counterparts, and that played into his witty banter [in costume] as well.
In a recent interview with The Hollywood Reporter, Tom Holland talks about how his version of Spider-Man will differ from others. His Spidey is noticeably younger, and this is the very aspect that will shape how he works through his new powers:
“You’ve seen the billionaire, the scientist, the soldier. Now it’s time to see the kid,” Holland says. “And every decision we make on set is based off how would a kid react in this situation, so every fight scene we have is designed in a way that’s almost child-friendly, so he never actually punches anyone. It’s all done kind of by accident. I think the biggest difference is his youth and innocence.”
