Obi-Wan Kenobi Series
Star Wars fans rejoiced at the announcement of a long rumored live-action Obi-Wan Kenobi project. Originally intended to be a movie, Kathleen Kennedy announced at last year’s D23 Expo that Lucasfilm would instead develop a series for Disney+.
Ewan McGregor returns as the Jedi Master, and the show takes place during his exile on Tatooine between the events of Revenge of the Sith and A New Hope.
Deborah Chow directs the series after recently directing two acclaimed episodes of The Mandalorian. Behind the pen will be screenwriter Hossein Amini (Drive, Our Kind of Traitor).
Recent reports confirm that production of the series has been delayed until early 2021 in order to fine-tune the scripts. McGregor stated in an interview however that they’re still on track to meet their intended release date.
Rumors are that it will revolve around Obi-Wan’s depression and PTSD following the events of Episode III. Speculation indicates the series features Sharad Hett, a character from Legends. If true, this marks the first time the character has been seen in the new canon.
Disney is also looking to cast a young Luke Skywalker. Considering Obi-Wan’s mission on Tatootine is to look after young Luke, it makes sense that we could be seeing him, if even from afar.
In the same report, Joel Edgerton was rumored to be reprising his role as Uncle Owen from Episodes II and III. We’ve seen snippets of Obi-Wan’s exile on Tatooine in the current canon.
He and Uncle Owen’s differing opinions on how best to raise Luke is often a point of contention between them. They regularly come to blows. If the casting of Edgerton’s correct, we could see this rivalry play out in live action.
