Halloween: Five Horror TV series to Watch

What We Do in the Shadows

What We Do in the Shadows is another horror movie that jumped to the small screen. The original movie was written and directed by Jemaine Clement and Taika Waititi. It follows vampires who share a house in New Zealand and we see their lives through the lens of a mockumentary. Yes, it’s a comedic horror movie and, in my opinion, one of the best. When the TV show was announced, there was a lot of pressure on it. The cast from the movie wasn’t returning (at least in the main parts) and we were meeting vampires who live in America.

Fears were easily dispersed when it was announced Jemaine Clement was in charge of it. The series features an impressive cast in Matt Berry, Kayvan Novak, Natasia Demetriou, Harvey Guillén and Mark Proksch. The guest stars include Mark Hamill, Tilda Swinton, Wesley Snipes, Evan Rachel Wood, Benedict Wong and more.

Much like the movie, the series follows vampires living together and they’re followed by a camera crew. The mockumentary lens provides a refreshing spin on a mythology that’s been done over and over. Even though most of the vampires aren’t the most likeable characters, you’ll still find yourself loving them. Matt Berry’s Lazlo is my favorite (mostly due to my love for the actor) but all of them are brilliant.

Harvey Guillén’s Guillermo is Nandor (Kayvan Novak)’s familiar. His job is to do the things his master can’t do. However, since the vampires are lazy and self-serving, Guillermo does a lot more than he’s supposed to and is treated like a servant. It’s through his eyes we see the other characters better. If you’re looking for something funny to watch, this is the show for you. The episodes are also only half-an-hour long too.
