Halloween: Five Horror Video Games to Play

Alan Wake

Alan Wake was originally released for the Xbox 360 in 2010. Last year a remaster was released on the PS4, Xbox One and PC. It tells the story of a crime fiction writer suffering from writer’s block. He goes on holiday with his wife on the advice of the latter and his agent. However, things take a turn when his wife is dragged into the water by a figure in black. To get her back, Alan races against the clock and fights enemies from a shadow realm.

The story is cleverly told through narration. It’s Alan Wake doing the narration and as a side mission, you need to collect pages of his manuscript. After all, it’s in this manuscript where the answer to Alan’s questions lies. Alan fights the shadowy figures through the use of a torch and guns. While you can collect the guns and bullets fairly easily, you’ll lose them at the start of each episode. Alan Wake is a mind-bending thriller that takes you on an adventure you’ll never forget.

Alan Wake is set in the same universe as Control. Both games are developed by Remedy Entertainment. There’s also a sequel releasing (hopefully) next year. However, it’s going to be more of a survival horror this time around. Furthermore, if you’re looking at playing Alan Wake there are also two DLC expansions that further the story after the main story ends.

If you’re looking for a character-driven single-player game look no further.
