Set to the music of The Proclaimers, Sunshine on Leith is a musical movie set in a specific part of Edinburgh. Leith is where Craig and Charlie Reid were born so it’s only fitting it’s where the story takes place. The story revolves around two Soldiers returning home after an accident and adjusting to their new life.
There are some jokes only those from the UK will understand. One of these is a Scottish character bemoaning his date is English. It stems from the once bloody rivalry between the two countries that has turned into a joke. There’s also another about Glasgow versus Edinburgh. The same goes here in regards to a rivalry.
Even though the story takes a serious turn, it’s still an upbeat and fun movie. When it released on DVD, I watched it 15 times in one week. If you’re looking for something to cheer yourself up then Sunshine on Leith is definitely up for the job.
Fans of Doctor Who may recognize Stephen Greenhorn as the writer behind The Lazarus Experiment and The Doctor’s Daughter. Greenhorn also created the Scottish soap opera River City. Meanwhile, fans of 1917 will recognize George Mackay in one of the leading roles.
