1. Star Wars Episode IV: A New Hope
In 1977 came a film that would become movie history. George Lucas wrote and directed Star Wars, later retitling it to Episode IV: A New Hope. It soon became the highest grossing movie in history at that point, making almost double what the previous record holder made.
The film had a troubled production to say the least. Lucas was the only one that truly believed in what the project could be beyond a quirky homage to the sci-fi B movies of old.
Alas, he persevered, and on release the film was catapulted into the cultural stratosphere.
There’s nothing to say about the film that hasn’t already been said. The incredible score by John Williams, the iconic sound design by Ben Burt, the world-building and creature effects; all wonderful additions synonymous with the brand.
The film is, at its heart, an adventure film, with our young hero Luke Skywalker, played by Mark Hamill, on a mission to rescue the princess and save the galaxy.
Hamill will come to grow into the role, but here he’s still capable and fits the part perfectly. Harrison Ford is effortlessly cool as scoundrel Han Solo. Rounding out the big three is Carrie Fisher’s wonderful portrayal of Princess Leia.
Sir Alex Guinness also shines, earning his Oscar nomination as wise old Obi-Wan Kenobi.
The action is incredible, the spectacle is gorgeous, and the story is timeless. A New Hope is a near-perfect film that remains relevant to this day and launched a franchise that has truly stood the test of time.
