11. Star Wars Episode II: Attack of the Clones
Attack of the Clones was released in 2002 and is the second in the Prequel Trilogy. George Lucas took directing duties, with a script by himself and Jonathan Hales.
Star Wars fans generally regard it as the black sheep of the series, and it’s easy to see why. The pacing is criminally inconsistent. Anakin and Padme’s relationship is so ham-fisted and forced, with some of the worst dialogue ever committed to film.
It’s clear that Hayden Christenson and Natalie Portman are trying, but the script massively lets them down.
It’s a shame, because there are some great ideas at play. Somewhere, deep underneath the abundance of CGI and course, rough, irritating sand, there’s a good movie. Maybe even a great one.
The mystery of Sifo-Dyas, who actually commissioned the clone army, is genuinely compelling. The fight sequence on Kamino between Obi-Wan and Jango Fett is great, as is the climactic battle on Geonosis.
Love it or hate it, there’s no denying the thrill in finally seeing Master Yoda fully unleash his abilities on Count Dooku.
Other steadfast Star Wars stand outs are the iconic sound design and the score by John Williams. “Across the Stars” is a particular highlight, and a great addition to the plenteous catalog of great Star Wars tunes.
