Review – Millarworld’s ‘Night Club #5’

Night Club #5 is the latest issue of the Millarworld comic about vampires. Mark Millar writes the series while Juanan Ramírez provides the art. It tells the story of Danny Garcia (a teenager) who becomes a vampire and uses his abilities to be a superhero and to try and become a viral sensation online.

However, something darker appears to be afoot.

In the previous issue, Danny is taken to hospital after he’s found in the rubble of a destroyed building. However, a security guard shoots him after seeing his vampire abilities. When the coast is clear, he escapes only to find his friends in the hands of an old friend.

In Night Club #5, we finally discover who Detective Laskaras is and what he wants from Danny and his friends. His goal is simple and it’s up to the trio to decide if they want to join him. That’s all I can say about the story without giving what comes next away. Much like the final issue of Nemesis Reloaded, this is one you should go into spoiler free. (And if you haven’t read Nemesis Reloaded yet this is your sign to do so).

While there is action, it mostly takes a back seat to more character development. With the finale approaching, it makes sense to spend more time with the characters and understand where they are. Vampire stories tend to focus more on the fights but Night Club enjoys taking its time to let us connect to the protagonist and his friends. Through doing that, it raises the stakes for the next issue.

Mix all of that in with Juanan Ramírez’s bloodthirstily beautiful art and you have a vampire tale as immortality as the creatures themselves.
