Technically, I’ve covered Simulcra before. In spite of that, I’m looking at the newest game in the series. When the Halloween video game article went live, the third game wasn’t released yet. Therefore, I’m only covering Simulacra 3 this time around. The Simulacra series is from Malaysian developers Kaigan Games. This is the only game in the list that’s also available on consoles. All of the paid Simulacra games are on the Playstation and Xbox as well as mobile and PC.
I’ve played the mobile and PC versions. With that, I can say it’s so much better playing it on a phone. It sweeps you into the immersion easier. If you’re using a computer or a console, it doesn’t feel like you’re using a phone. Whereas, playing it on your phone means you feel as if it’s you doing everything. You’re really only known as ‘rookie’.
The first Simulacra starts with a random phone appearing at your door. The second Simulacra sees a Detective giving you the phone. This time it’s similar to the second game. However, it isn’t a Detective who gives you the phone. It’s a journalist.
And she knows the man to who the phone belongs.
Simulacra 3 revolves around unravelling the truth about an old legend. This is still very much a Simulacra story but it brings in a more mystical side to it. The legend is about a witch who terrorises the town. However, not everything is as it seems. Moreover, it’s very timely too with certain aspects of its story. I’d love to say what aspects I mean but that would verge into spoilers.
Just know it seems like Kaigan Games were keeping an eye on the news while making this game.
It has some new features too. Video calls actually let you respond now. Unfortunately, you can’t respond with your voice. It’s only through text. On the other hand, this is a step forward for the franchise as it’s never happened before. This is also a feature you can find in Scriptic. It’s one I hope the other games add at some point.
Most other interactive messenger games come up with a reason for the video call either not to work or do it in a way you don’t have the time to respond.
You’re also able to track a character’s location through a map. You need to uncover certain clues first but they’re easy to spot once you get familiar with the game. After meeting a host of colourful characters you’ll eventually face what lurks in the shadows… so, be ready.
