The D.M.C. plays a prominent background role in this film. Not only are they on-scene when Firefist has his tirade outside of the Essex Orphanage, but they are also in control of the Ice Box, a top government mutant prison ripped directly from the pages of the comics. They are a division of the Mutant Response Division, an entity of the government that is tasked with hunting down and detaining rogue mutants.

They were first created for the Wolverine and the X-Men cartoon, and soon after made it into the pages of the comics. The only change that was made when the M.R.D. transitioned into the comics was that it was sanctioned by the United Nations.

In the comics, the Ice Box also housed super-powered mutants. The prison appeared only once in Maverick #8. Essex Corp. owning orphanages has comic roots as well, in order for Mr. Sinister to conduct his twisted genetics experiments on mutants.
