Percy Jackson is a Young Adult book series by Rick Riordan. It revolves around a teenager who realises his father is Poseidon, the God of the Sea. Every summer Percy attends Camp Half-Blood, a safe haven for the half-mortal children of the Greek Gods.
There he befriends Grover, a Satyr in training, and Annabeth Chase, the wise-cracking daughter of Athena.
Throughout the five-book series, the trio is tested with betrayals, new friendships, monsters and jealousy. The series opened the door to more Young Adult adaptations of other mythological Gods, while the adventures of an older Percy and Annabeth is also continued.
Last year, at D23, Disney announced it was making Percy Jackson fan’s dreams come true. A live-action Percy Jackson and the Olympians series is coming to Disney+. Thankfully, Rick Riordan is very much involved in the process of the series, unlike another adaptation.
This isn’t the first Percy Jackson adaptation. Most fans like to call the original adaptations the Peter Johnson movies. This alludes to Dionysus, the God of Wine, always calling Percy by the wrong name.
It also shows the negative impact the movie’s had on the fanbase. However, that issue isn’t with the actors, but rather with the creative team. Rick Riordan released e-mails showing the notes he sent to the executives, telling them fans would hate the movie. Unfortunately, the studio didn’t listen to the author and the movies bombed.
Afterwards, any future adaptation of the series was looking less likely to fans. However, Lightning Thief: a Percy Jackson musical is near close enough to the first book.
This only stings the fans more since a Broadway musical fit more canon into a shorter runtime than the movies did.
If you haven’t checked out the Lightning Thief musical out, you should. The song My Grand Plan gives more development to Annabeth than the two movies ever did. The soundtrack is great, and Rick Riodan even gave his blessing to it.
The 12th of July is important for two reasons. In the Percy Jackson universe, Annabeth Chase celebrates her birthday. While she celebrates turning 28 in the book canon, the writer’s room for the series begins.
This means we’re still at least a year away from season one, it’s good to know it’s full steam ahead.
Rick Riordan has unveiled the showrunners and writers too. Fans of the Broadway musical will be happy to know its writer is part of the team.
