Annabelle is the second release in The Conjuring universe but it takes place before the events of The Conjuring. The movie was directed by John R. Leonetti.
It’s an uninspired paint by numbers Horror movie that tries to emulate what made The Conjuring successful. Unfortunately, it fails to live up to that hype. It also trades in heart and true horror for bland jump scares.
Characters aren’t built up well enough, and that becomes a downfall when sacrifices are made. Why should the audience care about sacrifice if there’s no connection to the character?
Annabelle had a simple idea, yet its execution is what ultimately makes it the weakest entry in The Conjuring series.
