#3 – Annabelle: Creation
Former toy maker Sam Mullins and his wife, Esther, are happy to welcome a nun and six orphaned girls into their California farmhouse.
Years earlier, the couple’s 7-year-old daughter Annabelle died in a tragic car accident.
Terror soon strikes when one child sneaks into a forbidden room and finds a seemingly innocent doll that appears to have a life of its own.
– Annabelle: Creation Official Synopsis
Annabelle: Creation sees David F. Sandberg in the Director’s chair, who recently helmed DC’s SHAZAM!
This entry in The Conjuring series explores the origins of the Annabelle doll. It also uses its third act to connect with the events of the original Annabelle movie.
It’s a moment that makes the audience gasp in surprise and shows the first entry in a different light.
Much like many of the other Conjuring entries, the focus is on the story and the characters within it. This helps the inevitable scares as it makes the audience fear for the character’s safety.
One of these scares features the toymaker trying to banish the evil using a Crucifix. The evil counteracts the power of Christ and forces the toymaker’s fingers to snap backward.
There are also several appearances from Valak, connecting this entry to the then-upcoming The Nun.
Annabelle: Creation is a scary movie but don’t let that fool you. It’s also about the relationships between the girls in the Orphanage. Because of this, it’s scarier when Annabelle attacks.
The focus on their relationships is what makes Annabelle: Creation take the number 3 spot on this list.
