Behind the Mask: The Rise of Leslie Vernon
Behind the Mask: The Rise of Leslie Vernon is a fun found-footage take on the slasher/serial killer sub-genre. A documentary crew is filming a serial killer for a project. They follow him around as he shows them the ropes and explains the tropes in a dysfunctional way.
The official synopsis says:
The next great psycho horror slasher has given a documentary crew exclusive access to his life as he plans his reign of terror over the sleepy town of Glen Echo.
The movie is similar to What We Do in the Shadows in that it’s a black comedy poking fun at the movies that have come before. Horror fans will scream with glee at the Easter Eggs from Friday the 13th, Halloween and more.
Speaking of Easter Eggs, there is one that will make Freddy Kruger fans happy. Robert Englund is in it. He portrays Doc Halloran, a character reminiscent of Dr. Loomis from the original Halloween.
Seeing him as a ‘hero’ rather than the villain is jarring at first, but it’s a character he makes his own.
Behind the Mask: The Rise of Leslie Vernon is worth a watch. It turns tropes on their head while providing several twists that will leave you gasping.
