I came out of Mission Impossible: Fallout wowed and amazed. Tom Cruise and director Christopher McQuarrie had somehow outdone themselves once again. The real impossible mission will be managing to top Fallout. Ghost Protocol (directed by Brad Bird) and Rogue Nation both were great films, but Fallout is by far the best and solidified a fantastic trilogy.
After checking the reviews, Fallout holds a very impressive 97% RT (Rotten Tomatoes) score. I also discovered that Ghost Protocol and Rogue Nation both clocked in at 93%. Clearly, that is a remarkable achievement, but I couldn’t help but wonder where this ‘2010s Trilogy‘ (as I’m dubbing it) fits in the all-time trilogy list.
I looked at four parameters to compile a Top 10: the Rotten Tomatoes Critic score; the Rotten Tomatoes Audience score; the Metacritic score and the IMDB rating (multiplied by 10 to also be out of 100, rather than 10). Therefore each trilogy in this list has an average score graded out of a potential total of 400.
10th place was a fierce contest. Trilogies sitting just outside the Top 10 are Iron Man (302.3), Back to the Future (309.0), Alien (311.3), Terminator (314.7) and Evil Dead (316.7). Possibly the most surprising trilogy to not make the Top 10 is Back to the Future.
It is important to clarify there are no personal opinions involved here. These are purely based on official ratings.
So, what does the Top 10 look like? Let’s start with…
